Squash

Grafton has three squash courts and runs a comprehensive internal league each month, with around 11 boxes comprised of more than 50 participants. This ensures a wide-ranging standard across the club.

We also run a social squash evening every Sunday from 17:30, providing a great opportunity to play opponents of different standards. A club closed and a handicap tournament run each year, with more informal, social tournaments organised throughout the year as well.

Grafton has three teams competing in the Surrey winter and summer leagues. All are welcome to represent the club and enjoy hosting and being hosted by other clubs after competitive team fixtures on weekday evenings.

Graeme Hogarth ( email: graeme.hogarth@kcl.ac.uk mobile: 07890 875 696 ) is available to book for one-to-one or group coaching sessions on Saturdays. Racquet re-stringing services are also available over the bar.

A successful junior squash programme has run at the Grafton for the past four years with coaches Graeme Hogarth (ESR level 1 and organiser) and Duncan Marlow (ESR level 2). We meet on Saturdays (in term time) from 4:00-5.30pm and have players of all abilities and ages (currently from 8-18). We try and have a mix of technical development and fun games, often having handicapped tournaments so that players of all standards can play one another. At the advanced level, some of our players represent Lambeth at the London Youth Games. Sessions are open to both members and non-members and work on a pay and play basis (currently £5 per session). We provide rackets, safety goggles, balls and chocolate biscuits so come along and get introduced to a life-long hobby.

Graeme Hogarth has played at the Grafton for nearly 20 years. Having come to squash at a relatively late age (34) he was soon captaining the first team in the Surrey Leagues and now plays at second and third team level. He has represented Surrey at over 50s level and set up the junior squash programme in 2011.

Grafton Squash Coaching: Squash coaching is available from Graeme Hogarth (England Squash Level 1 Coach) for £30 first session and £25 every subsequent session. I also offer 4 sessions for £90.

Junior coaching: These sessions run from 4-5.30pm every Saturday in term time. Only £5 per player – pay and play. Attendance recently has fallen and if we can’t get 6-8 players regularly then we are in danger of having to pull the plug. This would be a great shame as over the past six years we have introduced 50+ children to the sport. One of our first group of players, Andre Bandrath now plays for Imperial College Squash team and this year current players Vivian Hogarth and Daniel Firmin both represented Lambeth in the London Youth Games (winning matches – a first for Lambeth in living memory).

Squash Teams

Grafton has a number of teams actively playing in local tournaments including Surrey Summer and Winter team doubles for both tennis and squash and the Aegon doubles for the men’s 1sts If you are interested in representing Grafton, please contact either the tennis and squash leads on the committee or the captain’s listed below. Contact details are incorporated within the membership section of Grafton’s mycourts page.

The new Surrey County Squash Leagues are up and running (http://county.leaguemaster.co.uk/). Unfortunately we have had to withdraw the third team due to a lack of committed players. The good news is that both the first and second team have got off to excellent starts and have won all matches to date, and sit at the top of their respective Divisions.
